Who is Sheriff James Galton from Sweet and Deadly and what is their importance?

James Galton is Lowfield's sheriff. Catherine goes to Galton after discovering Leona's body. He tries to help Catherine while investigating the murder, assuming that she might have something to do with the murder, especially after she denies recognizing the body, and Galton discovers it is her father's nurse. Galton, however, has known Catherine since she was little girl and quickly comes to the belief that she is not capable of murder.

Galton later tells Catherine that he discovered at Leona's house that she was a blackmailer, and that she might have stolen some medical equipment from Dr. Linton's office. Catherine uses this information to help her figure out who killed her parents and Leona. After Tom is killed, Galton is once again suspicious of Catherine.
