What does Doyle do to the members of Sister's group and why?

Doyle kills many of the members of Sister's group in an apparent attempt to get the glass ring. He attempts to take it from Sister, but the part that he touches turns dark. Sister stabs him with it, giving Artie and herself time to escape.
