The narrator, being the only one with experience, seems at home in nature. She has retained some connection with nature. Her guests, however, struggle in nature and would literally be lost without her. They are so far detached from nature and the natural that they cannot be at home in it anymore. They need distractions like fishing, the radio, cards, or books.
