Robicheaux stops at the New Iberia public library to do some research on the powerful Terrebonne family. Robicheaux learns that Elijah Terrebonne, one of Lila's ancestors, had been a prosperous slave owner. Upon his return from the Civil War, Elijah Terrebonne found his plantation had been looted. This proved to be such a hardship for Terrebonne that his wealth soon dwindled.
