Charlie, Sara's little brother, is on the porch steps trying to put the stick back into the candy of a sucker when we first see him in this book. Sara takes it and fixes it, complaining to Charlie about her shoes, about the boring summer, and about how she does not feel like doing any of the things she normally does.
