Who is Philippe Pericand from Suite Franaise and what is their importance?

Catholic priest, Philippe Pericand, is the pride of the Pericand family. Though he wishes to be a holy man, he is a disappointment to his mother, who wants him to become well-known. Phillipe enjoys his work in Switzerand. When his father volunteers him to escort a group of orphans to safety, Philippe does as he asks, but he is unable to extend any Christian love to the children..... he views them as vacant and mechanical. The orphans, whom Philippe suspects to be lacking souls, turn on him and brutally murder him en route.
