Madame Pericand is described as organized, busy and highly efficient. She is in charge of the running of the household and family affairs, including the manners and education of the children. Madame's primary goal is to appear pious, righteous and generous, but internally she is petty and feels superior to those less wealthy. She pushes her older son Philippe, and she is rude and degrading to her younger son, Hubert.
Monsieur Pericand is employed by the French government, so the couple have mixed feelings about their loyalties. On one hand, they are ashamed and tired of the government and speak out against it, and on the other hand, they entertain government officials with false smiles and feigned loyalty.
