Sam is the owner of Steakhouse Sam's, the restaurant where Meredith's mother and father decide to go eat the Saturday after Meredith's father is released from prison. Sam is an ex-marine with a low boiling point whose son only missed being on Charles' boys' league team by one month. Instead of greeting them kindly, Sam tells them the restaurant is full. When Sharon pushes the issue, Sam tells her that if they don't leave, he will call the cops to have them escorted from the property.
