When they migrated to London, the West Indies immigrants (parents of the Rastafarians) wore clothing that was loud and gaudy, a stark contrast to what was worn by the mass culture. Although their intention was to encourage the people and convince them that life was going to get better, this made them stand out as a group that was trying to overturn the mass culture
