When subcultures began to take shape, what group or groups of people became active participants? Why?

The youth of Britain are the first to explore this idea of a subculture. They want to break away from the thumb of the dominant culture because it has held them in a state of oppression. The war has given them the opportunity and courage to establish the rules they deem worth following.
