The mass culture uses style to give a certain impression. For example, the style of the wealthy woman is to wear a wedding ring with several karats of diamond. The ring will speak for itself. If someone sees a woman with the ring, they will assume the woman is wealthy. This has achieved the woman's purpose of wearing the ring. There is no underlying message that she's trying to communicate.
