Love is a recurring idea. Shawn describes two types of love in the narrative. First, there is the type of devotional love that one feels for family. This is the kind of love that Shawn feels for his parents and siblings and he imagines they must feel the same emotion. He recognizes the importance of this emotion, but notes that it is not all inclusive. This form of love does not allow them to see Shawn for who he truly is. With only this type of love, Shawn will be continually misunderstood.
