Who is Doctor Mahmoud from Stranger in a Strange Land and what is their importance?

Doctor Mahmoud is a linguist. Thus, he is able to communicate with Michael in Martian. Over the course of the novel, Mahmoud and Jubal become friends and enjoy conversing about Mars, Martians, religion, science and society. Mahmoud will later move into Jubal's home as a guests.
