The Gorgons's cave is symbolic of trauma. The author particularly uses the cave to reify Medusa's post traumatic stress after Poseidon rapes her. She begins to spend all of her time in the cave, hiding from everyone, including her sisters. She self-isolates because she is both ashamed and afraid of hurting others because of what has been done to her.
