Trust is a recurring idea in the story. Trust is another thing Annie lost when she is abducted. Annie trusted that the man who called himself David would not hurt her when she showed him the house, but he pressed a gun into her back and forced her into his van. Later, Annie trusted that this man would not hurt the child they made together, but she woke in the night to find him holding their dead baby. Annie lost all trust as she was tortured and held captive by the Freak.
