Slavery is a recurring idea in the story. Several times in the book, Rialla is enslaved or freed in different ways. Sometimes she willingly submits to taking on the role of a slave, like when she pretends to be Laeth's slave in order to spy, or when she decides to stay in Darran while Laeth and Marri escape. She is willing to enter again into slavery, in the hope of ending slavery for good. As she tells Tris, "I choose to act like a slave, so they can't make me feel like one" (p. 163).
