Throughout his memoir, Hsu adopts both a tender and critical perspective towards his college self. Stay True focuses almost entirely on Hsu’s life in college and immediately thereafter. He often describes his youthful qualities, including his frequently snobbish and pretentious attitude around music, film, and art. Hsu acknowledges, at many points in the memoir, that he displayed behavior that he now finds immature, thoughtless, or selfish. Despite these clear admissions of puerility, Hsu also writes with obvious nostalgia and love for his college years.
