Stage Door takes place entirely at the Floodlights Club which is a large old house located somewhere in the West Fifties in New York City. The club is run by the house matron, Mrs. Orcutt. She rents the rooms out to young girls who have aspirations to be Broadway actresses. The girls pay $12.50 a week - probably a steep price for 1936 - to stay at the club. Each girl shares a room with two other girls. The bedrooms are cramped as are the main room and dining room of the house. There is a large portrait of Sarah Bernhardt, the legendary actress, that hangs in the house as an inspiration for the young actresses.
