Natasha Alicia Van Meer is the deceased mother of Blue, and wife of Gareth. She was beautiful and free spirited, and an amateur butterfly collector. She named her daughter Blue, after her favorite butterfly, the Cassius Blue. Natasha is killed in an accident years before the events of the book. When Blue discovers her father's past, she surmises that an affair or love between Gareth and Hannah may have meant Natasha's death was not an accident, but suicide from a broken heart.
