what happens to melinda in launch room. how does it affects her,possibly for the entire year

In Marking Period One, the ninth graders meet in the cafeteria for freshman orientation. As she enters the cafeteria, Melinda describes the various cliques the grade has broken up into. Her friend group from last year has disintegrated, and each member has joined a separate clique. Melinda, however, remains alone. We might infer that this will affect her for the remainder of the year.... will she find somewhere that she belongs.... or will she remain alone and without true friends.
