How is this novel relevant to youth today and their culture?

The themes in this novel timeless. No matter what period of time you look at, alienation is a presence... and from the begining of time, rape has been a part of most every culture. Women who've been raped have often not been believed, many women who've been raped have been told it was their own fault, and many others simply haven't been believed. As a result, many women and girls who've been violated remain silent, unable to "speak."
