After calling her mother on Valentine's Day, Kate thinks about her childhood home..... the curtains hanging in her mother's home, all white and identical: "From the street it looked as if the house was always in order." These memories foreshadow the details we will later learn about family conflict, disappointments, and missed chances to "settle things."
