The language of the novel is central to its tone. The content of the novel itself might classify as a horror, but the language moves the story to the realm of dark comedies. The book starts out on a dramatic note: “This story ends in blood. Every story begins in blood: a squalling baby yanked from the womb, bathed in mucus and half a quart of their mother’s blood” (9). Here, we see the darkness that permeates the novel.
