Maccon is thealpha werewolf of the London group. While he is a peer, he is also the head of BUR which is a little like Scotland Yard for the supernaturals. Maccon is also the Fourth Earl of Woolsey and has only recently left Scotland and learned the better manners of the polite world in London. He has a werewolf who is second in command who helps him through the dangerous waters of society. Maccon is very personable. He makes an excellent hero. Maccon and Alexia are constantly at loggerheads with each other. Maccon tries to order her about but she isn't intimidated.
Maccon wants to keep Alexia out of the investigation of the werewolves' and vampires' plights. Alexia won't stay out of it. Maccon gives in. They become partners in the detection of the problem. They can't keep their hands off the other one as the book progresses. The climax has each of them in peril. They both solve the mystery and find the way to each other.
