A symbol of his commitment, the rings that Jonathan gives Martha eventually come to mean nothing to her. After first abandoning her wedding dress at the Hospice Shop, she considers for a moment throwing the rings into a flooded storm drain but stops short of doing it because “it was the kind of gesture that would have made Jonathan roar with laughter” (91).
