The fourth chair at the Reeds' dining room table is a symbol of loss as much as it is a symbol of grief and guilt. It sits empty while it is at the same time filled with the heavy implication that it would be filled if Henry had not died. The chair's presence serves of a reminder of the life that Henry could have had and how much of their own lives they have lost to his memory. It is an empty chair filled with the ghost of a life lost far too soon.
