The language choices in McMorris’s novel shift between the semi-formal, when narrating characters of an educated background, such as Ellis, Lily, and Alfred Millstone, and the informal when narrating characters of lesser education, such as the Dillards. Narration for Max Trevino and his henchmen carries with it a classic mobster aesthetic, using an educated tone peppered with informal colloquialisms.
