How does the author use foreshadowing in Solaris?

In Chapter Two, Kelvin is startled by his own reflection in the mirror. What startles Kelvin, however, is merely a reflection of himself. This event foreshadows the appearance of Rheya..... not the real Rhey, of course, but the reflection of what's in Kelvin's own mind.
