The second definition of racism Oluo names is "prejudice against someone based on race, when those prejudices are reinforced by systems of power" (31). This definition is the one Oluo chooses to use for the purposes of her book, since it takes into account not just individual beliefs and actions, but also the systemic and ingrained ways in which racism has formed the very foundation of life in the United States. This definition does not allow for absolving oneself of personal responsibility just because one does not hold explicitly racist beliefs.
