Touching on the subject of friendship, Oluo states that it was much more important in her childhood to find a friend who was poor like she was, than it was to find a friend who shared her racial background. That way, she states, she would not have to worry about being teased for the strategies her family had to use for their survival, such as visiting the food bank and snacking on dry ramen noodles when the water was turned off due to nonpayment.
