Oluo states that above all other goals she had in mind for the text, she wanted it to be useful to people in their everyday lives. She wanted people engaging in difficult, yet necessary, conversations about race to have a manual of sorts for which they could reach when delving into complex and unfamiliar topics regarding racism and the pursuit of social justice.
