Oluo is talking with a friend when he suggests that social justice movements focus on class, rather than race, in order to pursue equality across the United States. Exasperated by hearing the same argument yet again, Oluo takes a breath and asks her friend how he would go about improving the lives of the lower classes. She reports that he “recites the standard recommendations of strengthening unions, raising the minimum wage,” (19) and decreasing the levels of food insecurity for families living in poverty.
