Oluo recalls that in the 1980s, the mainstream United States culture glommed onto the idea of a world in which people did not see color and where all problems regarding race were nearly solved. This wrongheaded optimism affected kids of color because while they were told that they could achieve any goal they set their mind to, they soon found that there were many societal structures in place keeping them from moving toward their goals. In this way, Oluo demonstrates the harm that can be done from making false promises.
