Oluo explains that Seattle was a “very lonely place” for her for “a very long time” (49). One reason for this had to do with the fact that as she and her little brother moved through school, they are nearly always the only person of color in their respective classes. Then finally, in her early thirties, she found a Facebook group dedicated to bringing together people of color who live within the greater Seattle area. After she got involved in the group, she suddenly found herself in the company of “black and brown artists, professors, musicians, and tech leaders” (49).
