A few passages of the preface are dedicated to Oluo's regrets in relation to the first edition of her book. For example, upon the book's publication, she had heard from many people within Indigenous communities that she had not always used correct or consistent language when discussing various aspects of Indian cultures. She states that she wishes she had reached out to members of Indigenous populations before the first edition was printed, but she thanks those who wrote to alert her about her mistakes. She assures the reader that in this edition and in all future editions, all such inconsistent and incorrect language used in relation to Indigenous cultures has been changed.
