In Oluo’s senior year of high school, she was invited to attend a two-day conference for promising students of color who planned to attend college. Over the course of the two days, Oluo noticed how at ease she felt, since no one made fun of her name, commented on her body shape, marveled over the volume of her voice, or asked to touch her hair. She realized in that moment the way that living in a community with few people of color had affected her throughout her school-age years.
