Oluo and the other members of the Facebook group meant for people of color in the Seattle are flabbergasted one day during a picnic in the park. They are happily chatting away when a group of black men stop playing basketball and walk over to talk to Oluo’s group. When the men find out that the group is dedicated to bringing together people of color who live in Seattle, they ask if they can join the picnic. An awkward silence ensues and the group later realizes that while they had purported to be inclusive of all people of color, they had really only been open to meeting other people of color like them. The hypocrisy the group uncovers during this incident causes them to rethink the mission and identity of the Facebook group.
