When Oluo tells the story about an airport directory noting a restaurant called Africa Lounge, she describes the excitement and optimism she felt while walking toward the restaurant. She considered it a great idea to offer African cuisine within the international airport, in part because the diversity would lead to greater respect for African culture. So when she got there and found that the restaurant served burgers and was only called Africa Lounge because of its zebra-print chairs and caveman mural, she was disappointed beyond measure, not only because of the harmful cultural appropriation, but also because of the opportunities that had been lost by not putting an actual African restaurant into the space.
