One evening, Oluo’s young son came to her and told her that he had decided not to say the Pledge of Allegiance in school anymore. When Oluo asked him about his reasons, he said that his atheistic beliefs were not in accordance with the mention of God in the pledge. He also said that part of the pledge about freedom and justice for everyone is a lie, since people of color have never attained the levels of freedom and justice mentioned within the pledge.
