Mawdo, who prefers Aissatou to Nabou, is saddened by her departure. Nabou moves in. To Mawdo's dismay, the house is taken over by their Diakhao relatives. Having had two sons with Nabou, he tells the narrator that women do not understand that men are partly driven by animal instincts. That is why Aissatou shouldn't feel betrayed by his relationship with Nabou, which is purely physical.
