Aissatou has decided to leave instead of accepting the situation with the second wife. She takes her four sons with her. She leaves Mawdo a letter saying that she could not separate romantic love from physical love and that she cannot accept this situation. She despises her husband for giving in to his mother's every whim. Aissatou starts anew, rents a house, and studies to become an interpreter. She is appointed to work at the Senegalese embassy in the United States from where she regularly writes to the narrator.
