Nabou's, Mawdo's second wife, had a domineering aunt who raised her. She did as she was told and never questioned her aunt's authority. Nabou loves Mawdo, the husband that her aunt chose for her. As a midwife, she is a woman of knowledge and a working woman, like the narrator and Aissatou and is not interested in luxuries. In contrast, being from a poor background, Binetou is taught how to survive and if the price of survival is her body, so be it, she is willing to make the sacrifice for her mother's sake. She makes sure that her marriage to Modou, her prison, comes with many luxuries. Modou ridicules himself to win her acceptance but she still makes fun of him.
