What cleverness does Hideyo show in Chapter 4?

When Hideyo returns home to find his house ransacked, he takes food and supplies, including his family's savings book. He and his friends then change out of their Japanese school uniforms into Korean clothing and make their way along the railroad tracks south, toward Seoul. When they encounter two Russian soldiers, the boys pass themselves off as Korean Communist members.
