Why does Kabuo's attorney, Nels, challenge him to a game of chess before they discuss the case?

Perhaps Nels wants to show Kabuo that he still is in control of all his faculties in spite of his disabilities; he is still sharp and very smart. He wants Kabuo to trust him and his ability to help him.
