Why is Persse so grateful that he opened an American Express card?

As Persse pays for his flight to Geneva, he gives silent thanks for having opened the American Express card because it has made flying so much easier and quicker. Before, he had to go to a local travel agency and give them cash weeks in advance; now, he can simply walk up to a counter, flash the card, and be off.
