Gerda's emotional entrapment by the past is physically represented by her position on the balcony, where she stays seated, "her back tensed against the chair, as if it were tied to a pillar."

In addition, the recurring motif of hands, images of disembodied heads throughout Small Change are symbolic of terror and oppression.
