why did shen fu want his wife to be a man?

Yun actually wished she was a man...... because she wanted to be able to travel with her husband. Women in 18th century China didn't have a lot of freedom. Shen Fu agreed..... he loved his wife and considered her his favorite companion. Yen and her husband actually disguise her so she can attend a festival.
