Kathy, a reporter, represents how toxic the media can be in the novel. She harassed Simon's family in Omaha and immediately asks for an interview when she finds them in Grin and Bear It. Kathy sneaks around their home and tries to take picutres of the family when they are off guard. Kathy's character illustrates how dehumanizing the media becomes when the people behind the stories are forgotten.
