What happens to Mokichi and Ichizo?

The officials return to Tomogi with Mokichi and Ichizo in order to exact further punishment. Two trees, fashioned into crosses, are set at the water's edge and the officials bind the two men to the stakes. At night the tide comes and they nearly drown. For two days they endure this torture, until they die.
