What happened to the three men at the magistrate's office?

Upon arriving at the magistrate's office, the men are told to trample on a picture of the Virgin Mary. Each man does so, but the magistrate is not fooled by their actions and he asks the men to spit upon the image. Only Kichijiro complied with his command.
